It is evident that were moving towards greater renewable energy generation. However, the intermittent and fluctuating nature of renewable energy generation significantly affects the stability of the power grid.

The use of storage systems facilitates and optimises the integration of renewable energy plants in electricity distribution systems, enabling optimal management and improved profitability of the installation.

Limited transmission and distribution capacity in the grid leads to congestion issues during periods of high wind generation. When generation is frequently reduced for this reason. When installed next to a wind farm, this system can absorb excess wind generation and avoid curtailment of the wind farm during grid congestion periods and so achieve optimal load release of the renewable energy sources.

In photovoltaic fields, the passage of clouds causes sharp power drops with fast recoveries when the cloud passes. These power variations cannot be absorbed easily by the electricity network. The use of storage systems enables excess power to be absorbed in one case and the corresponding demand covered in the other, thus increasing the efficiency of the plant while at the same time avoiding administrative penalties due to electricity network breach.

These are some examples that demonstrate the advantages of storage systems associated to renewable energy generation. It therefore also avoids higher investments into the electrical grid, since the energy is directly consumed where it is generated.

Smart Grids. Stored energy provides temporal levelling of generation and consumption at all times in order to assure the stability of the power grid.
